Description

Beautiful pre-dawn light, this was about a 2 minute exposure in near darkness, although you wouldn't have thought so looking at the image :D composition was a case of hit and miss but turned out okay if you ask me.

This piece, set in what appears as a painted landscape, is nothing short of magic. Not viewable by the naked eye, however, this portrait of a moment is brought to us through technique fitting a master. Wonderfully framed - and processed - well adjusted exposure, good colour balance. Soft lines direct your eye to the horizon to look for the source of light and the cove alludes to a point departure.

To break down the critique:
Vision - Forethought is evident in this one. From the comments one can glean that it required trial and error and much dedication to get a working shot. Knowing before hand what would be required to capture this speaks well of the vision the photographer had for the original shot's potential.

Originality - To be honest, the originality of this shot isn't all there. I don't exactly hold originality as the be-all-end-all quality of anything, mind you, but to give it a mark for this category, I can't say that it is more than an extremely well shot postcard.

Technique - I cannot emphasize enough that technique MADE this photo (literally/figuratively). Taking this with a long exposure in the dark, adjusting exposures, colours, contrasts, etc., applying filters, and still maintaining this level of clarity and resolution demonstrate the work of a veteran. Even if the method of applying these techniques is nothing spectacular, if just goes to show that simplicity in editing can still yield ethereal results.

Impact - WOW. How can anyone view this and not wish to be sitting cliffside to that motionless ocean? The softness of the distance and the sharpness of the land serve to contrast mediums, textures, colours, and ideas: the harsh solidity of rock, and the soothing serenity of water; stability and free-fall. The blending of the ocean with the sky has the effect of extending the horizon. The only thing I have to say on the negative side of impact is that the image is limited in it's file-size, and I feel that the impact could be further increased by being able to immerse yourself in it.

Congratulations on creating magic from real life. This is truly art.
